Anixter Center has proudly served hundreds of thousands of people in the Chicago area since 1919. Today, we focus our work on serving people with disabilities, behavioral health needs, and people who are Deaf, DeafBlind, or Hard of Hearing through a variety of programs. Annually, Anixter services touch more than 7,000 individuals, some on a daily basis and others for more time-limited support. SUMMARY
Connections, which will be under the Youth Program, is a family centered support program that links adults who are
Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Deaf Blind (“Mentors”) with families who have children who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or
Deaf Blind, providing an array of support services.
- Support families’ communication opportunities with their child, including all communication modalities
(American Sign Language, Cued Speech and Listening and Spoken Language).
- Model conversational interactions using the families’ chosen mode of communication.
- Share personal experiences as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing individual as it relates to individual families.
- Provide relevant information and resources as it pertains to families’ needs, priorities, and goal/s.
- Provide information on assistive technology (auditory and visual) for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf Blind individuals as it relates to families.
- Assist families and children with learning advocacy and access skills.
- Assist the family in helping their child to achieve his/her full potential in both the hearing and deaf worlds.
- Outreach to Parents and Professionals:
- Represent CHS at parent events and networking groups to inform them of program activities.
- Work with professionals through CHOICES for Parents to reach parents of children recently identified as having a hearing loss.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf Blind.
- Knowledge of the technology available to assist with effective communication with families.
- Ability to interact and implement activities with a variety of children and adults.
- Ability to be unbiased, open-minded, and supportive of family decisions with their communication and amplification choices.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to an operational vehicle to transport self to various locations.
- Must follow HIPPA laws and other policies as it relates to being a Mentor.
Education
- BA degree in social work, psychology, counseling, early childhood education, or related human services field preferred.

HOURS: Mondays - Fridays, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM some flexibility during the week and some evening and weekend hours may be required for community education or to accommodate the needs of clients.

SUMMARY
Provides crisis intervention, problem solving, and short-term counseling to Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing (DDBHH) survivors/victims of domestic violence. Most meetings with clients take place in the CHS office. However, usually due to clients’ transportation limitations, some meetings may occur at agreed-upon locations in the community.
DUTIES
- Refers and case manages survivors/victims to appropriate community resources for services such as emergency shelter, long-term counseling, and housing assistance.
- Ensures communication access to all related services including medical services and to police and court proceedings, usually using sign language interpreters.
- Advocates on behalf of survivor/victim to ensure his/her rights and interests are protected within the Illinois Domestic Violence Act and in interaction with other service providers.
- Educates survivors/victims about their rights and responsibilities in order to encourage self-advocacy. When necessary, accompanies survivors/victims to court, meetings with police, lawyers, and other service providers.
- Implements data collection procedures to document service delivery and demographic information about survivors/victims of domestic violence.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Fluency in American Sign Language, knowledge of Deaf culture required.
- Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field required.
- Must take 40-hour Domestic Violence training.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to an operational vehicle to transport self to various locations throughout the metro Chicago area and collar counties.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of Bachelor Degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, counseling or a related field.
- 1 year of direct service work experience in the Deaf community with a strong knowledge of community resources.
- Fluency in American Sign Language, prefer ASL as a first language, and knowledge of Deaf culture.
- Must own and maintain an operating vehicle, have a valid driver’s license and be eligible to be an agency-approved driver.

SUMMARY
Manages and guides Youth Services for Chicago Hearing Society under the following headings.
Adult Role Models in Education of the Deaf (A.R.M.E.D.):
- Recruit deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing individuals
- Develop and distribute ARMED Request Form to Chicago Public Schools and surrounding suburban schools and Coordinate and schedule ARMED presentations.
Connections, Deaf Mentor Program:
- Recruit deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing adults and train them to become Mentors and provide homebased services to families with deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing children, age birth to 22 years.
- Provide support and resources to Mentors and families as needed.
Youth/ Teen Outings:
- Plan several structured activities for deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind children every month.
- Arrange transportation services for participants.
Leadership Workshop:
- Provide one-day workshop for deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind high school teens.
- Coordinate activities with Illinois Service Resource Center (ISRC) and Gallaudet University Regional Center Midwest (GURC), co-sponsoring organizations.
Outreach to Parents and Professionals:
- Represent CHS at parent events and networking groups to inform them of program activities.
- Provide information and referrals.
- Work with professionals through CHOICES to reach parents of children recently identified as having a hearing loss.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Fluency in American Sign Language, knowledge of Deaf Culture required.
- Minimum of 2 years work experience in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities
- Management skills: the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities

I am contacting you to let you know that we currently have three openings to teach American Sign Language 101 in the Sign Language Department here at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Illinois (west of Aurora, IL).

These courses are from 8/21/17 - 12/16/17
Each class pays $2325 per 16 week course. The ideal candidate would teach one, two, or three courses. If you taught all three, the pay would be $6975, with only preparation for one class (as all three are the exact same class). You are provided with the book and syllabus, and we have many power points and other teaching tools that can assist you in the preparation of the class. We are eager to mentor someone that is looking to get into teaching, and are committed to faculty development.
The minimum requirements for this position are to have a Bachelor's degree, and either be a native ASL user, or be on the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
