Hi Cordel Vail,

I would like to post an open position to the website. I have attached a copy of the posing to the body of this email. Please assist in posting this opportunity.

American Sign Language Staff Interpreter – Center on Victimization and Safety New York, NY, Washington, DC, or remote location

The Vera Institute of Justice, founded in 1961, is an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit organization that combines expertise in research, technical assistance, and demonstration projects to assist leaders in government and civil society, examine justice policy and practice, and improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. Vera has offices in New York City, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, and its projects and reform initiatives, typically conducted in partnership with local, state, or national officials, are located across the United States and around the world. Vera is an equal opportunity employer with a commitment to diversity in the workplace.

Through its Center on Victimization and Safety, Vera works to enhance services and systems for communities at elevated risk of harm who are often marginalized by mainstream services—in particular, people with disabilities, Deaf people, people with limited English proficiency, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, and young men of color. Since 2006, in partnership with Deaf anti-violence organizations across the country, we have been working to increase Deaf survivors access to culturally and linguistically-specific victim services and to enhance the capacity of hearing victim service providers, criminal justice system personnel, medical personnel, and other allied professionals to effectively support Deaf survivors. Central to our success in this work is promoting and providing language access. To that end, Vera seeks a part-time American Sign Language Staff Interpreter to provide and coordinate clear and accurate American Sign Language/English interpreting services for our internal and external meetings, trainings, and other events.

Coordinate interpreting services for complex or large-scale Vera-sponsored events that require multiple teams of interpreters.

Work collaboratively with other interpreters and interpreting teams at Vera-sponsored events. Participate in training opportunities to advance knowledge and vocabulary related to domestic and sexual violence, victim services, and other related areas.

Collaborate with staff within the Center and other departments within the organization. Maintain relationships with interpreters in the field.

§ Assist on other projects as requested.

Qualifications
Demonstrated skill and certification in expressive and receptive sign language interpreting.

Minimum of six years experience interpreting, with experience interpreting in the anti-domestic and sexual violence or related fields required.

Knowledge of vocabulary related to victimization, domestic and sexual violence, and the crime victims field.

Strong understanding of ASL and Deaf culture. Ability to work within a changing schedule. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds.

§ Willingness to travel.

Salary
Commensurate with experience, plus excellent benefits.
