ANCIENT CUSTOMS IN THE BIBLE:
"Why A Woman Prays With Her Head(face) Covered"

I have printed out here 1 Corinthians 11:1-15 from the LDS Missionary version of the King James Version of the Bible so we can examine it. The two footnotes cited at the end are as found in that edition of the Bible.

As you read this chapter, every time you see the word HEAD if you will replace it with either the word LEADER or FACE (that is the way it is actually written in the original early GREEK editions of the Bible) it takes on a whole new meaning. As you read it now you will see what I mean.

To help you do that, I have printed it out here and every time the word HEAD is used I have superscripted the meaning of either (leader) or (face). Hopefully making these inserts will help us to understand the original meaning of that scripture and clarify the meaning of the whole chapter as you read it.

HEAD, FACE, LEADER, little words with such big meanings.

1 Corinthians 11:1-15

(From the LDS Missionary Edition of the King James Version of the Bible)

1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

3 But I would have you know, that the HEAD(leader) of every man is Christ; and the HEAD(leader) of the woman is the man; and the HEAD(leader) of Christ is God.

4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his HEAD(face) covered, dishonoureth his HEAD(leader).

5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her HEAD(face) uncovered dishonoureth her HEAD(leader): for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his HEAD(face), forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.

9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

10 For this cause ought the woman to have power7 on her HEAD(face) because of the angels.

11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?

14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a coveringi.

Footnote 7: That is, a covering, in sign that she is under the power of her husband.

Footnote i : Or, veil

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It should be noted that in Middle East at the time of Christ, it was a custom to shave a woman's long hair off when she committed adultery to show that she had broken her marriage covenant with her husband. That is what is being referred to in verse 6 where it says "a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven".
With that ancient Jewish custom in mind, the key to understanding these verses lies in three key parts:
1. Verse 10 footnote7
2. Verse 10 "because of the angels". Also read D&C 107:20
(This part will take some thinking on your part and observation of small details. Remember what we are trying to figure out here, where we do that, and then think about, at that time, who is doing what and why).
3. Verse 15 footnotei.
Often times the key to understanding spiritual things comes from having a curious mind, asking "WHY" and the ability to observe little details. Now I ask you why they put the veil over an Endowed LDS woman's face when they bury her? I will let you figure out the rest of it for yourself.
NOTE: Nothing in any of these Sunday Sermons is intended to represent the official doctrines of the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are strictly instructions and teachings from Cordell and Janice Vail to their family.
